TECHNICAL SCHOOL MANAGERS
The monthly meeting was held yesterday . afternoon, there being present — Messrs T. Scott (chairman), G. C. Israel, W. M'lndoe, W. Burnett, J. E. White, A. F. Quelch, R. S. Menzies, A. Burt, J. A. Haslett, A. M'Millan, J. H. Wilkinson, J. Haymes, A. Washer, and Dr Colquhoun. The Secretary- reported that the balance duo to tho contractor of the college was £6,500, and the Finance Committee had passed for pavment £5,500, leaving £I,OOO, which, together with the £625 owing to Messrs A. and T. Burt, would leave £1,625 due on the building.—Mr Israel, in moving the adoption of the report, said that at the last meeting members would remember the board were getting into a straitened position with their finances. The Government had voted for a fourth year £3,300, and the Finance Committee * found some little difficulty in getting advances, but thanks to the good offices of Mr G. M. Thomson, M.P., in Wellington, this matter had been rectified, and they had received the accommodation they needed. In round figures the board owed Messrs A. and T. Burt £I,OOO, but the architect had not beon settled with. Mr Israel said that once they got out of this difficulty he thought it would be their last. —Mr Wilkinson seconded the motion, which was carried. The report of the Works Committee stated that Mr T. W. Kempthnrne had intimated that ho was prepared to defray the cost of erecting tho wall and fence in front of the college, and at the same time he handed the director a cheque for £IOO. Mr Mandeno had undertaken to prepare the plans and specifications, and the committee, after a careful consideration of these, had arranged with Mr M'Lellan to erect the wall and gates for the sum of £145. The wall and fence designed would provide the finishing touch of effectiveness to their magnificent building, and Mr Kempthorne's generosity should be. specially noted, the more so since the present donation made £9OO given to the college by him in two years.—The report was adopted. The Director reported that the woodworking machinery from Robinson's, Rochdale, England, had now arrived. The two English lathes and_ the Canadian lathe for the engineering department had been received and placed in position in the workshop. He recommended that the radial drill be ordered,
and so complete the equipment arranged for engineering. The boys of the day classes contributed (per Mr Selby) the sum of £2 14s to the college funds, and suggested that a flag should be procured. Mr Marshall endorsed tho suggestion, and asked for authority to purchase the flag.—The report was adopted. A- hearty vote of thanks was passed to Mr G. M. Thomson for the assistance he had rendered the board in connection with their finances. The teachers at the college were granted the use of certain rooms in the college for the purpose of holding a sale of work, the proceeds from which are to be used in assisting to furnish some of the rooms.
