MEETINGS AND SOCIALS

The monthly meeting of the Women's Christian Temperance Union was held on Tuesday afternoon in the No-license Rooms, Moray place. A report was received from Mr Robertson, Seamen's missionary, that the work at the Sailors' Rest gee* on steadily. Of late a number of wharf laborers had taken advantage of the comfort the Rest affords, and some destitute ones were supplied with soup, etc., at midday. The following resolution was carried—" That the Dunedin City •W.C.T.U., realising the widespread evil'of the gambling habit in this Dominion, view with great apprehension the proposed intraduction in Parliament of the Gaming Act of 1910 Amendment Bill, and emphatically protest against the proposal of the Bill to increase the number of race days on which totalisator permits may' be granted, as tending to increase the facilities for gambling, and being therefore mimical to the best interest of the country." Mrs W. R. Don addressed the meeting on the recent Congress held in Wellington, and urged the won.en to work and pray, and God would give them the victory. A vote of sympathy was passed to the family of the late Mrs Boot, who was one of the oldest and most respected members of the union. Mrs It. If. Driver occupied the chair, and had the pleasure of welcoming several new members. It was decided to j heartily congratulate Mrs Gain, president of the Trinity Board of Hope, on their succese in winning the two challenge choir competitions at the recent contest. On Tueshay night Trinity Church Schoolroom, Stuart street, oontaned a very happy party, notwithstanding the bad weather. The occasion was a. gathering of the Band of Hope, together with parents and friends. Those who won prizes in the recent competitions provided the programme. The Rev. W. Arthur Hay presided. He congratulated the young people | on their success in securing the competition shields—the people and the parents were proud of them. The programme consisted of the following items :—Solos by Elsa i Stokes, Evelyn Shepherd, Daphne Stokes, Lilian Taylor, Ealonor Ferens, Harry Carey. R. Calverly; recitations—Essie Johnson. Harry Carer. Ted Shepherd. Freda Stokes." Apatha M'Lean, Nellie M'Donald. .Jessie Keast; dialogue—Leslie Gain and Len Griffiths, also A. M'Lean, A. Campbell, and R. Calverlv; duetsEvelyn Shepperd and Rita Mason, Lilian Taylor and Bob Calverly ; reading, Harry Kent; and the competition anthem by the ciioir. During an interval Mr A. E." Stevens gave a stirring address -upon "The Helping Hand.' Sir E. Rcseveax addressed words of encouragement to the boys and girls, and proposed thanks, which was carried by acclamation to those who had coached the children so well. In tableaux he mentioned Miss Gflmour, Messrs Kinsr. Cult, X, Vanes, W. Penrose; in elocution Misses Burton. Walton, Dorothy Kosevear, and Rev. W. A. Hay i in singing Miss Hartley, Mr S. Lawn and ! W. Gemmeil; as pianists, Misses Toase and Ackroyd; the choir, Miss Oilmenr: .ir.d the leaders of the Band of Hope, Mrs Gain and Mr Mason. On behalf of the band, the Chairman handed to Masters Walter and Sidney Raplev, who were leaving the City, suitable books as a,memento of their connection with Trinity Band of Hope. The Hostel Birthday Club of the Y.W.C.A. held their annual birthday social la.-t . night, when tome 60 ladies and gentlemen spent a most enjoyable evening. Finding jartners broke the ice, and a capital grocery competition caused great t fun. Miss Heads and Mr M'Farlane carrying off prizes for the greatest number oi guesses. Musical items were contributed by Misses M'Donald, Sutherland. Martin. Hart, and Dawson, and Messrs Thompson, Sutheiland. and Braid, and musical monologue by Miss Le Brum A good, charade was got up by the crests, i and a capital farce. 'The Spinsters' Club.' i conducted by Miss Sylvia P;:nkhurst {who | was personated by Miss Griffin), was given by the hostel party, and caused great amusement. The proceeding? terminated with y-upper, and votes of tnanks to (he two secretaries (M'fses Griffin and Seaman), proposed by Miss M'Donald ; and the Birthday Club., bv Miss Seaman, which were most heartily carried. Among the I visitors wet? Mr and .Mrs Hughes and ! party from Y.M.C A., and. Mr and Mrs Jameson (na'ional secretary Y.M.C. A.). A special vote of thanks is due to Miss D. Tho Lily of the Valley Lodge, 1.0. G.T., held their 38th annual concert on Mondav iu the Albany Street Oddfellows' Hall, the building being filled by an enthusiastic and appreciative audience. Bro. A. J. Pater son, D.C.T., occupied the chair, and took the opportunity during the evening of setting before those present the work the Good Templar Order was doing in all parts of the world, and urged all who could to come along and help. The programme consisted of pianoforte solos bv Sister M. Paterson and Miss R. Marks"; songs by Bro. Paterson, Master Wilson, Sister E. "Williams, Mr G. Whale,'and Miss J. Clarkson : recitations by Misses Singleton, M. Dunn, V. Williams, and Mr W. Mills; violin solo bv Mr M'Bride; musical monologue bv Sister B. South; Highland dances "bv the Misses Jean Hidden, Nita Frame, Eileen King, and Winnie Robertson; and a fancy dance _ and sailor's hornpipe by Miss Emily Wilson. Nearly all of the performers had to respond to encores. Sister M. Paterson and Miss Keates acted as accompanists, while Piper Morrison supplied the bagpipe music for the dancing. Bro. 11. M'Kinlay, C.T., moved a hearty vote of thank's to the performers and all who had assisted'to make the gathering_ so successful and enjoyable, the motion being carried by acclamation. The Rev. F. T. Read presided over the weeklv meeting of the Cargill Road Methodist Literary Society. The subject was 'Knots and Splices.' Mr E. Barwell gave an interesting talk on seafaring"matters, with some practical illustrations. He was accorded a hearty vote of thanks. Musical items were, "given bv Misses Woods, Rainsford, and Scott, Messrs V. Stephens, P. Blackburn, and J. Stephens.
