Tho Melbourne University author!tics have appointed Professor Marshall Hall to the Ormond Professorship of Music, rendered vacant by the death of Professor Peterson. [Professor Marshall Hall formerly held this chair, having been the first Ormond professor appointed.] NEW SOUTH WALES PARLIAMENT. NO-CONFIDENCE AMENDMENT LIKELY. - SYDNEY, July 7. The State Parliament opened to-day with the usual ceremony. The Governor’s Speech, as foreshadowed, concerns practically every department of legislation. It indicates many reforms, a vigorous policy of public works in connection with the State’s needs, and decentralisation is promised. A clause iu the Governor’s Speech declared* that the Crimes Act would be amended to put an end once for all to the death-penalty, even for capital offences. The Legislative Council adopted the Ad-dress-in-Reply. In the House the Leader of tho Opposition (Mr Wade) secured the adjournment of the debate. It is understood that he will move an amendment against the Government to-day. A CHANCE DISCOVERY. QUARTZ REEF LOCATED. MELBOURNE, Julv 8. A party of rabbiters found a 20oz gold nugget in some old alluvial workings at Buninyong (near Ballarat), and subsequently an outcrop o£ payable quartz was discovered.
