BOWLING
N.Z. BOWLING ASSOCIATION. A meeting of the council of the above association was held last evening; present —Messrs J.-J. Marlow (in the chair), Jos. Allan, W. C. Allnutt, M. F. Barnett, C.. E. Smith, and J. H. Hancock. Mr G. Court (Auckland representative) wrote resigning on account of ill-health, but it was resolved to ask Mr Court to continue in office till his term expires, at the same time regretting his indisposition. Mr Barnett handed in proxies from Messrs Collins, Vpitch, and Bush (Wellington members. A letter was received from Mr J. J. Roberts, secretary of Wellington Centre, asking why the council had granted permission to a team not organised by any official body to tour Australia.—lt was explained that permission had been granted only on the distinct understanding that the' team were regarded as merely a travelling party, in no wise recognised as a representative New Zealand team.— Several members said that the doings ,ot the team were being reported as though fairly representing New Zealand’s strength, which was not at all the case. The Southland Centro, asked permission to award certificates for certain of their competitive events, such certificates to be given, not to individuals, but to clubs only.—Mr Allan pointed out that Southland Centre comprised a large number o! clubs, embracing a very large area ; different to many of the smaller centres. — It was agreed 'to grant permission for this year. Several communications from the North wore received expressing the opinion that composite bowls should be allowed, as they were in favor with a great many players. At any rate, a decision was desired, so that bowlers might be able to order for next season.- —There was some discussion, and it was finally agreed that the “Bussey ” bowl, sample of which was on view, should be approved, the mattei of approving Excelite or other composition bowls being referred to the executive with power to act on samples being supplied. A long discussion took place on AFt G. R. Smith’s motion:—“ The player, while delivering the bowl, must have the whole of both feet on the mat, otherwise the bowl may be stopped by the opposing side, and in that case it shall become a dead bowl.’’ Eventually it was agreed that the rule shall read: —“ The player, while delivering his bowl, must have a portion or the whole of both feet on the mat.”—.Mr Jas. Allan vigorously protested against the council deciding this matter just now. Ho thought it would be soon enough at the end of the season, when bowlers had fairly considered the question. He objected to the motion, and had his protest recorded. The other members present voted for it. The council then went on to consider the new rules, but had not finished at a late hour. The matter will be reconsidered at a future meeting. • GREEN ISLAND CLUB. The annual meeting of the Green Island Bowling and Tennis Club was held last night. About 30 members were present, and the chair was taken by Mr W. T. Smellie (president). Mr B. Bayley (auditor) read- the annual report and balance-sheets. The latter showed a credit balance of £lB 16s 2d on the bowling club account and £7 18s on the tennis club account. The club’s liabilities were shown to be £829 11s Sd, including mortgage and loans. The Chairman, in moving the adoption of the reports and balance-sheets, remarked that the club had had a fairly successful year. They had incurred some heavy expenditure, including £240 in connection with the billiard room and table. He was sorry they had not done better in the inter-chib matches, but hoped they would do better in future. On the financial side, it would be seen that they had paid £SO off the original mortgage and £lO oft another liability. The tennis club had won several matches, but had withdrawn from the Otago Lawn Temiis Association on account ot the expense. Ho thought it was a heavy drag on a young club like theirs to have to pay 3s per member to the, association. Mr T. Thomson seconded the motion, which was carried without discussion. The following were elected office-bearers for the current year:—President, Mr W. Gnddos; vice-presidents, Messrs P. M'Lean and James Geddes; secretary and. treasurer, Mr W. T. Smellie (re-elected with applause); Managing Committee —howling, Messrs A. Smellie, W. M'Dona.ld, L. Miller; tennis, Messrs S. McDonald, James Thompson; selector, Mr W. T. Smellie; ground supervisor, Mr A. Smellie; Competitions Committee—Messrs H. Harraway. J. M'Clymont, and A. Smellie; delegates to Dunedin Bowling Centre, Messrs W. M'Donald and A. Smellie; auditor, Mr B. Bayley (re-elected). The retiring President, ou vacating the chair, thanked the members for the support given to him during the year. He was sure the same assistance would he accorded to his successor. Mr Kane proposed a hearty vote of thanks to the retiring president for his handsome present (heating apparatus), which ’ was greatly .appreciated by the ladies in dispensing hospitalities; also to Mrs Smellie for her liberality. The motion was carried with very hearty applause. Proposals for improving the ground by tree-planting and disposing of the small billiard table were approved of. A motion was carried recommending the Competition Committee to encourage rink-playing The matter of sectional play was discussed, and the delegates to the centre wore left a free hand in voting on the question. On the motion of Mr W. McDonald, it was decided to recommend the new committee to improve the tennis court by putting it in first-class condition. It was. he said, a most important part of the club, and it might lapse if improvements were not made.
