GOLF
[From Odr. London Correspondent.]
May 29. > It will be a long time before this week’s play in the amateur golf championship at Sandwich will be forgotten. The record entry included a strong contingent from America, and players from Australia, France, and Sweden. The home talent proved equal to repelling the invasion, however, and when tho fourth round was over the visitors were all out. Sensations have followed on sensations, the first being tho defeat of Jerome Travers, the American champion, by a 55-year-old veteran in C. A. Palmer. Tho latter only took the lead at tho 17th. hole, but with the American feeling Palmer also won the the next and match. Another hope of America, in F. Ouimet, who beat Vardon and Ray in the open championship of America hist September, went under to' H. S. B. Tubbs, a littleknown player, in the second round. The Englishman played fine golf until the last few holes, when the knowledge that ho was winning, and the excitement of the spectators, put him off. Ho recovered, however, and won by two holes. America’s hopes then ggntred in “ Chic ’ Evans, of Chicago, but he caught C. B. Mavfarlane at his best in the fourth round. The Britisher went to the turn in 31. his card reading ; 3, 4, 3 r 6, 4, 2, 3, 3, 3; so that he was 5 up. He became dormy 6, but then lost three holes in succession, but securing the 16th, won the match by 4 and 2. The last of the Americans to go under was H. Weber", who was beaten (6 and 4) by Captain Hutchinson in the fourth round. This round also saw the defeat of Harold Hilton, the holder going under to E. Blackwell by 2 and 1, after a great struggle. Curiously enough, not one of the players who gained these notable victories survived their next rounds, Palmer, Tubbs, Macfarlane, Hutchinson, and Blackwell all being beaten. Tho defeat of Blackwell by L. A. Phillips was the sensation of the fifth round, the match going to t|ic 19th green. The sixth round this morning resulted in more surprises, E. Martin-Smith beating J. Graham (3 and 2), whilst R. p. Humphreys defeated L. A. Phillips (2 and 1). C. 0. Haslet, of Ireland, and J. L. C. Jenkins, of Scotland, also prevailed, so that two English players, an Irishman, and a -Scot were left for the semi-finals. [Jenkins beat Haslet in the final.] . Luck certainly played a. big part in the victory of J. L. C. Jenkins, of Croon (Scotland), over C. 0. Hezlet, of Port rush (Ireland), in the final' of the amateur golf championship at Sandwich. Ho was stymied four times to the once of his rival, whilst several times his splendid attempts to hole long puts just failed, the ball lipping the hole. He was always a trier, however, and when he got into a potbunker at the short sixth ho took his niblick and holed out. winning the hole in 2to 5. Subsequently he reduced Jenkins’s lead to 1. The latter drew away, however, and was sup at the eleventh. The struggle ended at tho 16th hole, where Hezlet was stymied so that ho was beaten by 4 and 2. The whiner did tho morning round of 18 holes in 76 to his rival’s 78, whilst their scores for th© 16 holes in the afternoon were 70 and 67 respectively. The surprise of tho French amateur championship at La Boulio was the form of H. J. Tapping, of America. He qualified to meet F. Ouimet, of America, beating such strong rivals as Jerome Travers and Chic Evans. His fellow-finalist qualified by defeating C. A. Palmer, and Lord Chas. Hope (holder) of and E. L. ’Appexley, of Australia. Ouimet proved too good*for his fellow-countryman in tho decider, but had no easy task, as it was not until the sixteenth green in the afternoon round that ho was able to secure tho honors.
