POLITICAL NOTES
[From Our Pabxumentarx Reporter.]
WELLINGTON, July 7. Keen political supporters of Prohibition confess to a fear- that the licensing Bill will not survive the second reading.
Generally, it is thought that the Opposition should terminate the No-con-fidence Debate owing to lack of interest inthe issue. Member’s are anxious to proceed with legislative questions, the Government are ready to bring down their policy measiAce, and it is recognised that there will he fall opportunity later on for discussion of party claims and electioneer'ing subjects. Hie present debate is admitted to be destitute of value. It is understood that the Liberals will fail of their purpose if they expect to draw the member for Chalmers tVora tho Ministerial side to the Opposition benches. There is no prospect of an immediate announcement of Legislative Council appointments. In this, as in other matters, the Government are veiling tjieir intentions until after the collapse of the present profitless debate.
