The first shield match of the season was plaved at Auckland on Saturday, Waikato being the challengers. The weather was fine, but the ground at Remuera was rough and not suitable for good hockey. A fast and exciting game, in which flashes of brilliant hockey were frequently seen, resulted in a win for Auckland by 4 goals to 2.
