The master of the. Golden. Red drc-d(><» reports a return of 19oz 2dwt for a weeks
work. , , r , , , j The Black-water River Companys drerfg* did not wash up last- week, as the ground was very poor. The. manager of the New Wavwua mine, Ruaot-umi. imports timf the rise from th« north end of the intermediate level is up 53ft.. and he expects to connect with No. 5 level this *<*-k. A leading stope can then be taken out over the back of the intermediate level ready for timbering and stoning the block. In the stones at the north end of No. 2 block the formation is verv iuullockv at present, and will continue 'so for another sft or 6ft, when H gives place to clean -.re. In the centre ot the block a nice reef is showing, in which strong dabs of coarse bright gold were, visible at. List breaking-down, lb- stope south from the main rise, where the ore has been low grade lately, is now giving better prospects, the ore being more than payable. ~ The crosscut to intersect the r.ast Parallel and Dunedin Reefs at the Watchman mine, Tararu, was advanced 6lt last week, making a total of 37ft from No. 4 ri6L\ Quartz was exposed after the last round of holes had been fired. A few pieces of quartz of a firm description, showing rhodnite and sulphides were broken with the shots. No. 1 stope in theniain level was in progress south of No. 1 rise. About oft of quartz was showm-. divided with about 4ft of sandstone. The none looked well, and occasionally showed gold freely. The first stope had been carried along for a distance of 50ft north of No. 6 rise." At this point a head had come across from the hangingwall. and this bad changed the country to a darker class ol sandstone. Gold was not so freely seen. The quartz on the- .Middle Parallel reef measured about 4ft wide, and occasionally shott-ed strong colors of gold. Reporting on the work done at the Ivosw Goldfields during the week ended June 26, the acting superintendent (Mr G. W. R Turner) states that in No. 6 level, No. 2 west drive, off No. 4 south drive, was extended to a total of 40ft, the last Btt being in wash of improved value. Blocking was carried on east and west of No. 2 south drive, in No. 5 south blocking was carried on east and west, and No. 6 driva was advanced 24ft, all three being in wash of pavahlc value. No. 7 south drive was closed" bv a fall, but a new drive \vaa onened out and extended Bft in wash of the same value as previously reported. A start was made on the opposite side, of No. 2 cast drive from No. 7 south to clrivo out over the. main No. 6 level, t_> which it will l>e connected by No. 5 chute. Eight feet had been advanced m poor waeh. No. 2 east drive was extended in wash of payable value. _ Mr Morgan, Government GeoJegist, is atpresent on a flying visit to the Tuapeka and neighboring mining districts. To-day, accompanied by -Mr James Robertson. Mayor of Lawrence, he visited Munro s Guflv, Blue Spur, Gabriel's Gully, Wetherstones, and Waitahuua, giving a good deal of attention to the immense gold-bearing cement deposits that exist in those wellknown milling centres. He was particularly fortunate (writes our correspondent! in having Mr Robertson as guide, because there are verv lew who know so much of the early gold discoveries of Tuapeka a* that gentleman. Mr Robertson was the friend and constant companion of Mr Gabriel Read, being with him before the outbreak of the famous Gabriel's Gully rush, and afterwards with him at the rushes at Waitahuna. Waipori, and the Ruustan. A chat with Mr Robertson, who has a marvellous memory on old-time incidentassociated with the early gold discoveries that played so important a. part in Otago s historv.'is highly interesting and educative. " Mr Morgan visits Waipori to-mor-row, and will confer with the local pros pecting association on matters incidental to the opening up and development of thiol d O.P.Q. reef from the Wuipon side ot the range. Mr Morgan returns to Pnnedin on Wednesday.
