EARLY SETTLERS

The committee of the Dunedin Early Settlers' Association met last ■evening, there being present Messrs Donald Reid (president), John Duthie. G. L. Denniston, E. C. Hazlett, A. B. Mercer, W. Nicolson, Donald Reid, jun., Mrs C. H. Havwara, Mrs M. Barnes, Mrs Sinclair Peden, G. C. Proudfoot (hon. treasurer), and John Wood (secretary).

The Secretary reported the- result of the election of officers at the annual meeting, and the following sub-committeee were appointed for the rear :' —Finance—Messrs G. L. Denniston, Joan Duthie. W. Nicolson, E. C. Hazlett, G. C. Proudfoot, and J. Wood ; Museum—Dr Fulton, Messrs W. H. Ferens, J. Hope, Donald Reid, jun., A. B. Mercer, Mrs C. H. Hayward, Mrs M. Barnes, Mrs Sinclair Peden, and John Wood ; Hall—Messrs John Duthie, G. C Proudfoot, J. Wood; Social—Mrs C. H. Havward, Mrs M. Barnes, Mrs Sinclair Peclen, Messrs W. Nicolson, A. B. Mercer, and J. Wood.

A vote of thanks for gifts made to the museum and portrait gallery was passed to the following:—Mr John Brown, for framed portrait of Mr F. Battson (passenger Bosworth, 1857); the first station master, Dunedin railway station, 1872, including a view of BurkVs township, with Burked brewery and jetty, and tne first train to Port Chalmers, with one of Fairlie's reversible engines attached, 1872 (the at Burkes); to Miss Gillies, Auckland, at Burke's); to Miss Gillies, Auckland, framed sketch of Dunedin and the bay, dated 1859, by Mrs S. Street, mother of Charles H. Street, of the well-known firm of Gillies and Street, of the early days; a photograph of North Dunedin, taken from the corner of Queen street and Grant street, also a number of family portraits; to Mrs Gibbis, Albert street, for framed portraits in oil of her parents, Mr and Mrs Isaac Martin, who arrived in 1861 and 1862 respectivelv; to Dr Fulton, for painting bv G. O'Brien of the Quarantine Islands from the Port Chalmers Peninsula. The following record of early settlers who had pa-wed away was placed in the minntes:—Alexander Crow, 54 (Alma, 1E62); William S. Melvin, 74 (City of Dunedin) 1864); Erroch Harrison, 57 (arrived 1861); George M'Sheedy Gentlenum. 77 (arrived 1863) ; Campbell Thomson. 82 (arrived 1858); William Whyte, 72 (Pladda, 1862) ; George Durham Jeffrey. 73 (Bluejacket, 1862); Hugh M'Auley, 80 (arrived 1862); Mrs Jas. Frederick Peake (nee Jago), 61 (Cheviot, 1862).
