HORTICULTURAL SOCIETY
In presenting the 33rd annual report, the committee of the Dunedin Horticultural Society have pleasure in reporting that the year has been a very successful one. The report says : —The balance-sheet shows that we have regained the position we held in 1912. The subscriptions show a marked increase, and so do donations to the prize fund. Admission money to shows also show an improvement. At the same time there was a substantial increase in prize money. With the exception of the summer fixture, the shows have been very succeesful. The experiment was tried of holding a rose fete in conjunction with the bands of the City, but the weather proved adverse, and the function, which without doubt had the elements of success, yielded no profit to either the society or the bands. The Winter Show of the society may be looked upon as the most important horticultural event of the year. The entry of new exhibitors into the competition arena in chrysanthemums is a most welcome and healthy sign. The presence of an exhibitor from beyond Christchurch with famous blooms enhanced the interest of this section. The standard reached by the exhibitors has been high and very even. The nurserymen's tables were good, and gave the much-needed relief to the cut flowers. But the glorious fruit from our own province and Marlborough was a revelation to most and a joy to all beholders. The fruit exhibit should be made a leading exhibit of our winter shows. The society are much indebted to Mr B. S. Irwin fcr his donation of £5 as a prize for collection of fruit, and also to Mr E. H. Walden for providing a second prize of £2 10s.
