PORT CHALMERS COUNCIL

The fortnightly meeting last night was attended by the Majpr (Mr T. Scollay), Crs Prattley, Stevenson, Percy, Majvson, Williamson, and Fail.

His Worship welcomed Cr Mswson back to a seat at the council table.

A motion of sympathy with the relatives of those who lost their lives in the Empress of Ireland disaster was passed, and the hope expressed that means would be adopted to render passenger ships less easibly sinkable by collision. —Correspondence.— From the Bev. G. T. Marshall, asking for some shrubs to plant on the bank in front of the Methodist Church.—Granted. From the Hospital and Charitable Aid Board stating that the borough's contribution for the ensuing year would be £173 8s lOd.—Received. From Mr B. Hooper, honorary secretary, asking for a donation towards defraying the expenses of the forthcoming lectures on town planning, the intention being to make the meetings free to the public—Reserves Committee to act.

From the Town Clerk, Ravensbourne, asking co-operation in the matter of waiting on the Railway District Traffic Manager in the matter of the alleged unpunctuality of the first trains in the morning.—The Mayor and Cr Anderson to represent the council, and to draw attention to arrangements not including Port Chalmers when the 20 to 10 a.m. train runs late.

From the Minister of Railways asking the Council to undertake the maintenance of railway-crossing notices respecting reduced speed of motor vehicles in approaching such crossings from the road, the railway to supply and erect the notice boards.—Works Committee to act.

From Mr C. Brown, asking permission to make a track to his house from Kaio lane, and stating that the steps from Constitution, street were not suitable. —Referred to Works Committee. —Reports.— The Works Committee reported on repairing work done, and recommended that 60yds of metal be procured for Beach road, behind the railway sheds. —Adopted. The Sanitary Committee reported respecting the Fox street sewer that 300 ft of piping was laid and four chains of trench dug for more pipes.—Adopted. The Finance Committee reported that since the previous meeting the receipts amounted to £2ll 13s 6d, and expenditure to £133 7s lOd.—Adopted. Cr Stevenson reported that the rata of I l-16d in the £ was not to be levied in connection with the £1,200 loan for the waterworks reserves extension. The Reserves Committee reported that the forester and his men were busy getting the nursery ready for lining out trees, etc. Re the forester's report, the committee recommended that the gorse be removed from the plantations with his present staff after this season's planting was completed; that clauses 2 and 3 be received and adopted; that shrubs be planted on the south side of Wickliffe terrace and the north side of Mary street, and that shrubs be supplied to the Wesleyan Church and Mechanics' Institute for planting in their respective properties; that the avenues of trees be maintained in Beach, Mount, and Grey streets, and that dead trees in those streets be replaced by a more suitable kind; that the cherry trees in Magnetic street be lifted and given a year or two in the nursery to recover, and then replanted in more sheltered places. The -committee further recommended that the Town Hall be let to the Cinema Company for a term at .a rental of 25s for one night, or 21s per night for two nights per week; that Mr E. H. Clark, M.P., represent the council at the Municipal Association meeting, to which remits be sent in favor of a universal voting and to do away with " plumping " at elections; further, that Mr A. Marfell, Sawyers Bay, be supplied with water from the corporation main, in conformity with conditions attached thereto.—ln reply to a question, Cr Stevenson said the council would sell ornamental shrubs to any householder. He said the lessees of the Town Hall would have to install the electric; , themselves.—Cr Williamson said that if the i elimination of " plump" voting was aimed at reducing the effective power 1 of organised Labor it would miss its aim, as organised Labor would put up candidates for jdlvacan- ! cies.
