COLD WORK ROOMS.
TO THE EDITOR. Sir—Permit me to thank "Sympathiser"' I for his "effort to draw tho attention of the public to' the fact that some of the City's work rooms are not fitted with proper heatrng appliances. I, as one who is employed in one of the above-mentioned work rooms, can fully endorse the statements made by " Sympathiser," and would be very please'd indeed if the present state of affairs could bo seen to. I and my fellow-workers have suffered severely with chilblains and other discomforts since the winter began, and find it impossible to get through the same amount of work aS could be done if the place wex& heated. If this matter were taken up, and employers were obliged to provide comfortable work rooms for their emplovees, I am sure they would find that it would pay them better in every way, and " Sympathiser" and others who may bo kind enough to interest themselves on our behalf would earn the gratitude of many a factory girl, who dreads going to work on frosty winter mornings to sit for eight hours in a place that is only lit for a ireezing chamber. —I am, etc., Z-Kr.o. June 8.
TO THE EDITOR. Sir, —I was pleased to see " Sympathiser's " letter in your issue or the sth inst., for I think it is high time the present state of affairs was remedied. I am personally acquainted with a number of young women and girls who have to toil for their daily bread in cold work rooms. We are told that local manufacture is one of Otago's best assets, 60 it behoves the
powers that be to see that our factories afford a ■ reasonable amount of comfort for those 4? ho have to Work in them. At present these refrigerators ore a menace to the health of our rising womanhood, and should not be allowed in a progressive country like New Zealand.— I am, etc., G. June 8.
