THE BURKES CASE.

TO THE EDITOR. Sir, —Without expressing any opinion whatever on the merits of the shooting case at Burkes, reported in your issue of yesterday, I desire to express my grave regret that the senior Magistrate did not point out that a rifle is a deadly weapon, and therefore its use, under any ordinary provocation, should be sternly reprobated, for no words or gestures, however opprobrious, indecent, or provocative, will excuse the use of a rifle, a deadly weapon. It is the plain duty of every magistrate to impress these facts upon the public whenever the opportunity of doing so arises.— l am, etc., Safety. April 30.
