ACCIDENTS AND DEATHS

A serious accident occurred near Wanganui on Sundav. As blisses Southey and O’Reilly and Mr J. J. O’Reilly were motoring to Waverlev the car got out of control. It went through a fence, and fell over » bank a distance of 120 ft. Mias Southey is in a private hospital suffering from a fractured skull and a fractured thigh. Her condition is verr serious. Miss O’Reilly is also in the hosp'ital, but is not so seriously hurt. Mr Reillv escaped injury. In the hush at Ohutu (near Taihape) yesterdav Patrick Moore was ramming a heavy charge of blasting powder to make wav for a tram line. It exploded prematurely, and h© received the full effects in the face. There is little hope of his recovering his eyesight. His left hand is also badly mangled. A sad' accident occurred in connection with the Cadet review by General Hamilton at Invercargill yesterday. As the Cadets were leaving the Show Ground after the review, where the inspection was held, a boy about 18 years, a member of ( the Mataura squad, named Thomas M‘Dermott, who was employed at Mataura, suddenly pitched forward and fell on his face. He was picked up and carried to the hospital. which was adjacent, upon an improvised stretcher, but on examination life was found to he extinct. The doctor in charge of the institution is as yet unable to give any definite information as to the ; cause of death. Word of the sad occurrence reached General Sir lan Hamilton and his party on their way to Dunedin vesterday, and telegrams of condolence were sent to the bereaved parents by the General and by the Hon. Mr Alien acd General Godley.
