POLAR EXPLORATION
THE SHAQKLETON TRIP. Press Association—By Telegraph—Copyright,
LONDON, April 25. Sir E. Shackleton was the guest of the Pilgrims' Club last night. The explorer sketched his plans for landing in Weddel Sea in the 'second week in December. Sufficient food would be taken for the whole transcontinental journey, and each daiiy ration would be of the highest nutritive value and 25oz»in weight. Sir E. Shackleton remarked that the £45,000 which had been spent on the last expedition would within three yea»» be saved by the magnetic work accomplished by observations near the magnetic pole. These showed variations in the lines of charts used by ships southward of Equator, which were slightly wrong. The correction enabled ships to save two hours on a voyage. Emphasising the importance of meteorology, Sir Ernest mentioned that the dense ice last season at Weddel Sea meant heavy rains in Chile and Argentina. This year's open season at Weddel Sea led to lighter rains in the Argentine. If similar observations were made over a series of years, farmers and stock-breeders in the Argentine would be able to more or less regulate their water supplies.
