YESTERDAY’S BOWLING

GOOD PROGRESS MADE. Practically the whole of yesterday was taken up with the Singles. the only departure was in getting off the final of the Christchurch Pairs, which were played on the North-east Valley Green. In this, IV. Helliwell and A. S. Gurney (Christchurch) defeated P. Inkster and A. Inkster (Waimate) by 22 points to 14. In the afternoon there were several close and exciting Singles games at Kaitnna, and as play was continued until after 3 o’clock the programme was well advanced—it had reached the semi-final stage for the green-winners before the last howl was sent down. P. Still played excellently all day, the Roslyn rink skipper (Fountain) being among his victims, but he succumbed in the end to John Collins (Caledonian) by a single point. M'Millan, of Nga Toa Club, North Island, played well throughout, and beat Holloway, of Northend. Invercargill, in the last game of the day. In tile fourth round A. W. Christie met his clubmat© Stevenson, and a fine game resulted in a win for Christie by 2 points. Much interest was taken in the match in the fifth round between Hain and Christie, and the onlookers frequently showed their appreciation of the shots by one or other of the contestants. Christie went away with the lead, having at one time 10 points against 3. Then Hain began to move along, and at the 12th head was only 1 point behind. Each player ■cored alternately, the play at times being very fine, until at the 20th head the Invercargill player put in a beautiful shot, just moving the jack a couple of inches, and turning a single into 3. Hain 1 up. with the last end to go. At the last head Christie eeemed to be out of it, but driving full tilt in an endeavor to send the jack out of bounds, with a remote hope of taking it straight back, he caught kitty fair and square, and scored two shots, thus winning the game. It was a very fine contest. On the Dunedin Green there were a large number of spectators present throughout the afternoon, and the games were watched with interest.
