In the Police Court at Auckland on Saturday James Walsh, aged 24, a photographer at Rotorua and formerly in the Po6tal Department, was charged with having obtained tire nuns of £29 10s, £IOO, and £145 from the Money Order Office at Rotorua in September and October by means of valueless cheques drawn on the Bank of New- Zealand. 'J*he prosecution alleged that the facts showed that the accused obtained various money orders by tendering the cheques in payment. Ae an ex-«»i/fl servant Walsh was known to tire staff, and, with a good character and reprofcentations that he was in a flourishing condition, induced the officers to accept the cheques. The orders were subsequently covered by the accused, but matters in connection with the £145 cheque had developed too far when negotiations for a settlement were opened. 'Die bank manager at Rotorua stated that the accused did not have sufficient credit at tlho time the cheques in question were issued to meet them. Various telegrams and credits were received in respect to other cheques Detective HoLKs said that on his arrest Walsh 6aid he was expecting to get a partner and repay the amount. Full restitution had since been inade. Walsh pleaded not guilty, reserved his defence, and was committed to the Supreme Court for trial.
