So poor was his display in the December Stakes at Randwick that Mr E. J. Wattcabled Trainer H. Rayner to throw Mountain Knight out of work for a time. The message, however, did not reach Rayner in time, and the colt scored in his next attempt. He now claims an engagement in the Phillip Stakes, a newly-established race over 5i furlongs, to be decided at the A.J.C. Anniversary Meeting on the 24th inst.

Whilst making his third successive speech as owner of the winner of the Gimeraek Stakes, Mr E. Hulton adopted an optimistic vein. He expressed the opinion that the Turf was never in such a flourishing state as at present, nor so free from abuse, and went on to deride the statements of ignorant critics in respect to the alleged neglect of duty i by stewards, bad starting, and the inefficiency of the modern methods of race riding. Mr Hulton also took occasion to review the Wootton-Sievier case, and expressed his complete confidence in his trainer and the jockeys attached to his (Wootton's) stable. Correspondence received from Sydney by a Ricearton sportsman gives some particulars of the disqualification of the exRiccarton horseman, Charles Emerson. According to the ' Press,' the writer has seen the horse, Strathfie-ld, regularly in his training gallops, and that ho has never shown any form that would lead one to believe that ho was capable of winning a race. Indeed, the horse's form had been so bad that his connections had decided to race him only at the unregistered tracks. Emerson only accepted the mount half an hour before the race, and though he rode the horse with the whip, the best he could do was to finish second to last. As previously stated, Emerson has appealed against his disqualification, and will be heard on Thursday next, the 22nd inst. Discouraging leports have been received from Trent ham concerning two of the South Island horses which claim engagements at the Summer Meeting of the Wellington Racing Club. Peg is suffering from a swollen fetlock, while Palisade is sore. The chief etfect of the. month's disqualification imposed on A. Oliver by the Wanguntii District Committee last week will be to prevent him from riding at the Summer Meeting of the Wellington Racing Club, which will open on Wednesday. W. Bell (23 successes) at present heads the list of winniug riders in the Dominion, while R. Berry (20) comes next. The vSt. Leger mare Lady Nestor, for whom 'Mr H. R.
