The wharf laborers only worked ordinary hours on Saturday. This move resulted in chaos on the wharf. The Willoclira left a quantity of untendered cargo on the wharf, while other steamers were delayed or called without portion of their cargoes. It is understood that this "direct action" was taken as the result of the failure of the recent conference between shipowners and waterside workers to effect a settlement. The men axe demanding 2s an hour ordinary rates, and 3s an hour overtime, instead of Is 6d and 2s 3d respectively. , Mr W. M.
