ACCIDENTS AND DEATHS
Mr James Pollock, the proprietor of the new Alexandra collieries, died yesterday morning somewhat suddenly.
Mr James Maealister, tcii., died afc Inv<reargill on .Saturday evening, at the a.ge of 78 years. He occupied the position of toJliery manage- in different pai'ts of Scotland. Mr Macalkter arrived in New Zealand with Ilis family in 1876, and settled in Invercargjll. His experience, of everything pertaining to coal and coal mining soon bc:ame. known, and his eprvicce and advice, were almost constantly in demand right up to within a few months of his death. Mr Macal.'sler was a. keen student of geology so far av it rotated to coal formations and mining. He leaves two sons —Mr William Macalistcr (Crown .Solicitor) and Mr James Maoalister—and threvj daughters. Mrs John Mackay. of Croydon Bush (near Gore). 57 years' of r.ge, died siicidcniv on Tuesday Light. Deceased had been friing for some year; from rupture, and was in (he habit of f iking' l carcara. On Tuesday night she niit-look a hoUlo containing aconite for carcara. Both bottles were I alongside each olhei. Deceased died about half an hour afterwards. An inquest wae hold, and the jury returned a verdict that deceased met her death by accidental poisoning. A YYaihi telegram states that two miners named Hilcbie and Woods, while engaged underground in the Crown miner at Kaxangahakc. were, owing to the collapse of a staging, precipitated down a pa.ss. A rush of quartz accompanied them. Woods was; completely buried, and when his body was recovered life was extinct. Ritchie was buried to the armpits. H« escaped with a slight bruism™.
