CITY IMPROVEMENTS

DRAI'IvRY .SITPLY ASSOCIATION. Some time ago .Messrs Pick and M'Kechnio secured tlio lease of tJi<? adjoining promises in George street, formerly occupied by Mr R. Renthnm, and the work of reconstructing and altering this building in order to make it a. part of the firm's original shop lias just been completed. The firm have also taken in a considerable amount of .space at the rear of Mr Bcntham's old promises. With the additional .'pace thus provided it was found necessary to reorganise the whole arrangement, ~f tha various departments, and extensive alterations had also to lie made in the firm'.! old premises. The floor space of the two buildings now amounts to a total of 37.600 ft. the old shop running hack 220 ft from the footpath and the new part 180 ft.

The frontage to George street occupies a length of 94ft. The liigh verandah i« lined with fibrous plaster, in white, and large throe-bulb electric light* are hung n,t short intervals underneath. A wide spae> has been left between the edge of the footpath and the large front gla?s windows, and in this space seven "island" window' stands are provided. The c?iliiifT j„ t\ XA new building and that in part of the original premises is also covered with rihrous plaster, in white, while many well-win-dows are provided, ensuring' a spljndi'd light throughout. Electric and gas light's illuminate the nhop at night, OHass counters have been constructed in both the new and the old shops. The shop both outside and in, certainly presents a most handsome, and attractive appearance and is an, adornment to George street' Mr Walden was the architect for th* alterations, and Mr G.
