THE MANCHESTER UNITY

The fortnightly meeting of the Loyal Alexandra Lodge was','held last Wednesday evening. N.G. Bro. A. =Kilgour was m the chair, and the attendance-was-good.' Seven candidates were initiated, and L.M. Bro. A. M. Wylie .gave the initiation charge, P.G.s Bros. D. Tilson and A. C. Ingles acting as conductors. This increase in membership brings'the roll number to 111, and Bro. T. L. Spence, to whom is mainly due this steady increase, is to be presented with a framed certificate. The chairman reported that the ladies of the district had given the Oddfellows a return social the previous week which had proved most enjoyable.. During the recess members engaged in games of cards. ■ The Loyal Vailey Lodge at their-meet-ing on Monday -night initiated four candidates, L.M. Bro. Thomson giving the customary charge, and P.I).G.M. Bro. A. W. Palmer and P.G. Bro. J. H. Stewart were the conductors. Per. Sec. Bro. Weiij- (of the Loyal Mosgiel Ledge) presented a neat oak ballot-box" to the Valley Lodge, and said that accompanying it were the best wishes of their Mos'giel brethren for abundant success. Tho lodge agents (Bros. Tonkinson. and Wood) provided the evening's entertainment in the form of a euchre tournament, and the prize (an umbrella) was won by Bro. Macdonald. a new member. The heels also provided supper, ;md the evening was • voted most enjoyable. The attendance was good, and of the district executive Bros." Palmer and Hamel were present. The chairman reported that arrangements were completed for the competition next week for the district banner, and N.G.s are requested to attend early and ballot for places before 8 o'clock. N.G. Bro.- Trainor, G.M. Bro. Scott, Bros. Knight awl Frcwd provided a smoke concert (and the smoke) at Tuesday's meeting of the Loyal Centenary Lodge. St. Kilda. A pleasant time was spent with Edison, and the hosts were heartily thanked. The N.G. was appointed to represent the lodge at the- half-yearly district meeting to bo held' at the end of the month. One candidate was initiated, G.M. Bro. Scott and P.S. Bro. Palmer controlling the ceremony. _ All the city and suburban lodges meeting this week made feeling reference to the loss the Order in general, 'and the Hand and Heart Lodge in particular, had sustained m the death of P.P.G.M. Bro. Broadfoot, and the meeting's stood adjourned out of respect to his memory. His family and ledge have received numerous messages ot sympathy, and his genial face will be much mirscd'in the lodges, for he was a consistent visitor. The Caversham Bazaar .Committee met twice during the past week, while the ladies' guild, are as enthusiastic as ever, for next Wednesday evening a gift conceit has been arranged, at which an excellent programme will be presented. With a view to securing a full house the committee'met hit evening and posted some 4jo invitation programmes. The members of the lodge are directly appealed to, as the result of the bazaar"affects them personally, while local residents aTe invited to assist on the unassailable ground that a sound friendly society is a'valuable asset to a borough. There was a gcocl attendance at the meeting of the Tapanui Ledge, on Thursday. N.G. Bro. W. Bitchie m-esided. The death ef Bro. Broadfoot wa"s referred to, and a cuitablo resolution of condolence was passed. The officers of the ledge were appointed a. committee to make arrangomnts for the annivorsay ball. One candidate was initiated, and at the close of the meeting Bro. Quaylo supplied f.upper. It was de° cided to hold a card * tournament next meeting. N.G. Bro. M'C'urdy presided over an attendance of about 20 members at the meeting of the Loyal Dalton Lodgo last Tuesday evening. After the routine work had been disposed of, one candidate was initiated, G.M. Bro. J. Maker and P.G. Bro. W. Bain giving the lectures. A letter of recommendation was granted to a member who is visiting the Southland lodges. The meeting was a very quiet one, and the lodge was enabled to close early tor a change. The Caversham Ledge met in their hall on Wednesday evening, and noted with pleasure the installation of electric light. N.G. Bro. 11. Bond presided over a good attendance, which was swelled later on by the entry of about a score of Albion members. A travelling certificate was granted to Bro. Gunn, who is visiting ledges m the Wellington district, and a condolatory message was forwarded to Bro. A. Mundic on the death of his wife Itwas decided to parade to St, Peter's Church on the morning of Sunday week, and the Caversham Band are to be asked to assist. The chairman crave a cordial invitation to members of sister lodges to bo present, P.P.G.M. Bro. Lawry, the energetic bazaar-secretary,. gave a progress report, making special mention of thcTgift concert next week. One. candidate was initiated, and the team for the banner competition next week cave a creditable rendition of the ceremony. The toasts were acknowledged bv N.G. Bro. Lilley (Albion) and P.P.G.M. Bro. Cole (D.E.). The recess was devoted to a card match beiwwen tho Albion and Caversham members, and the good wishes of the Albion Lodge for the forthcoming bazaar -were manifested by two members bringing p\its tor the stalls. ° -° The Loyal Albion Lodge met in the Rattray Street Hall last night, when N.G Bro. Lilley presided over an excellent attendance. The Loyal Dunedin Lodge paid ail official visit, rolling up 27 strong, and needless to say they received a heaTtv welcome. The new issue of the handbook was distributed and favorably commented on. A further increase in membership was made by the initiation .of four candidates, r, ™ Ander «w. ti-M. Bro. To the harmony of the evening P.S. 'Bro Nanniaun (violin solos). N.G. Bro. Trewern, G.M. Bro. Scott, and V.G. Bro. Greenfield (songs) contributed acceptable items, and the second toast was acknowledged by Bro Irewern (Dunedin) on behalf of the visitors. During the evening L.M. Bro. Scott conferred the first degree on five brethren A meeting of the Combined Ball Committee was held in the 'District Chambers on, Saturday night last, P.G:M. Bro. G A. Coughlan presiding. The principal business was the adoption of the balance- * oV'^ ch /, how?d the spl«n<3id balance of £l2 10s 3d. This result was mainly due to the untiring efforts of the secretaries (Bros. Marshall and Sullivan), and their services were recognised bv the presentation to each of a fountain pen It, was decided to secure the Art Gallery Hall for next year's function, which the committee hope to make, even more pleasant arid popular by opening and- furnishing the Ar, Gallery, making a cool retreat irom the crowded ballroom. The committee dismissed the advisability of holding an Oddfellows' picnic during the coming season. The suggestion was favorably received, and it is hoped that tho same 'loyal support will be g i ve „ to it (when arranged) as was- given to the ball. '
