FLAGSTAFF GREEK.

TO THE KDITOK. Sir, —It would appear as it there is to be no end to our mistakes as a City in reference to our revenue-earning departments. The latest incident relates tu the purchase of a farm f'..r £1,600, which farm, it is afiinned, contaminates one water supply. To avoid any misuiKierstanding, I may at once state that the purity of our -water supply should be as near perfect as the ingenuity of man can make it, but 1 shall oppose to the utmost what seems to me a useless and unnecessary waste of public money. Those who know me. personally or by repute will readily admit that I possess considerable knowledge of the general configuration of the intake area of our water supply, and therefore I am writing about something that 1 know absolutely. On Tuesday last the Deputy Mayor, Or Small, and myself visited Flagstaff* Creek The Deputy Mayor and ] tramped the creek from outlet to source, and it ■ was clearly demonstrated that no pollution was possible from Paul's farm. A stranger phase of this laud purchase question is the fact that obvious and nearer-house source of contamination seems to go unheeded by the chairman of the Water Committee. Also, reference must be made to the amount of money—namely, £1,600 —which is sanctioned for the purchase of this farm, the area of which is some 500 acres. An adjoining farfi was purchased some 18 months ago for about £1 an acre. I may add that the property was offered to tho council on two occasions previously, but was declined. With the knowledge I possess of the foregoing' it seemed to me only a matter of duty to my fellow-ratepayers to bring it publiclv before them.—T am. etc., A. M'MilW, Ex-Councillor for Bell Ward.
