SECONDARY SCHOOLS
CONFERENCE OF ASSISTANTS. . The annual conference of the Secondary School Assistants' Association opened at Wellington yesterday, Mr A; Heine (Wellington) presiding. " . It was decided that the next conference should be held in Wellington. The Chairman read a paper on ' Old and New Methods of Education,'criticising the lack of knowledge of grammar possessed by students under the present system, which in effect produced students who had "learnt many things but not much." Mr Rentier read a paper on ' New- Zealand Dialect,' discussing prominent defects in- pronunciation and enunciation. He suggested that teachers should first place themselves above reproach in this respect; 'then they could undertake to remedy defects in the children's speech. Resolutions were adopted urging the Government to issue regulations restricting clases to 25 pupils, and to make the military year for secondary schools' senior cadets coincide with the school year. It' was decided to urge tho Government to pass legislation governing the training of secondary school masters and mistresses. The members of the association are to be circularised to ascertain tho number who hold the department's certificates and the class of such, with the number of years' teaching and the time elapsed since the last promotion in certificate. Officers were elected as follows :—President, Mr F. If. Campbell; vice-president, Miss L. E. Ring; secretary and treasurer, Mr F v M. Renner; executive—Messrs E. W. Andrews, H. J. 1). Mahon, A. Heine, and A. C. Gifford. _ The executive were authorised to consider the questions of superannuation, salaries, and promotions.
