POLICE WOMEN
NOVEL, BUT SUCCESSFUL. Press Association—By Telegraph—Copyright. "OTTAWA, June 29. Policewomen have been appointed in Vancoiver, and similar appointments are being mede in Seattle and San Fra.ncisco. At the latter place 300 women applied for three vacancies. Tho civic authorities 110 satisfied with the women's work where the system has been tried. For tho first time in tho history of Philadelphia women po'ice have made their appearance There arc only two at present at work, Mrs Diehl and Miss Gillespie. They are detailed at railway stations, but they have full authority to act as guardians of the peace in all eections of the city. They wear a blue uniform, and are provided with revolvers and handcuffs. Their special duty is to look after unprotected girls, and to arrest obnoxious or disorderly persons who -innoy them, but they can be called upon for any police work. Their work is more of a protective character than anything else, for when they see men attempting to flirt with girls the'v show their badge md warn the men. If the warning is not accepted the men are arrested. Mrs Diehl and Miss Gillespie are well fitted for tho work by long apprenticeships as agents of the Travellers' Protective Association, .and their appointment is the first step towards the organisation of a separate force of policewomen for Phila- _____________
