MINING.

The wa3h at the Masterton claim was improving greatly all last week, and there is now a strip of good wash half a chain in width to the west of the centre of the face, and it is extending to the western aide. The ground continues to be deep, and the best of the waeh lies in the deepest ground on hard coal bottom. A telegram has been received from the manager of the New Sylvia mine, Thames, statins that a crushing of 900 tons of stone nas realised bullion valued at £1,127 and concentrates to the value of £233—a total of £1,360. The superintendent of the Ross Goldfielda Reconstructed mine reports, under date June 18, that at the sixth level the east drive had been extended to 118 ft east of No. 1 cross-drive, and was then in to the site of No. 1 rise, which would be commenced as soon as the drive had been driven a further 12ft. As soon as the rise was up a few feet driving could be resumed simultaneously with the construction of the rise. No. 6 bore had been put through to Cassius workings, at a distance of 22ft, and six bores were running. During the week the pressure had been reduced from 95ft to 4oft. No. 2 crossdrive was being enlarged, so that if more bores were needed to unwater Cassius, two more might be cut through. The superintendent thought it would be necessary to have two more bores with which to unwater Cassius, but he would not do this until the present bores were found inadequate.
