COUNTIES' CONFERENCE
The following remit to the Counties' Conference, to be held, in Wellington about the end of July, were pacsed by theClutha ' County Council on Friday: That the system of subsidising rates be amended, that all the general rates collected by the council be increased to 10s in the £ in ridings requiring to collect more than one Id. Motor Tax- —That the Government be urged to impose a tax of 5s per horsepower on all motor cars, motor cycles, and motor vehicles. This tax to be collected bv the Government and refunded to local hodiee for the maintenance of main roads. That a recommendation be sent to the Minister from tlu's council that the Puhliq Works Act be amended to extend the powers <>f county councils regarding the control of traffic on certain roads. That section 29 of the Local Elections and Polls Act, 1908, be amended so that the returning officer may be empowered to check hio deputies' returns by counting the voteij for each candidate, and comparing rolls used at polling booths to check dual voting (if any). That section 7 of the Local Elections and Polls Act he amended so that in counties a longer period than eeven da 3-6 be allowed between the day of nomination and tha day of eloction, and suggest that the word "seven" be altered to "ten" in section 7 of the Act.
