ACCIDENTS AND DEATHS.
The danger of allowing detonators within reach of children was instanced at Auckland on Saturday, when a small boy named Laurie Martin sustained serious injury to his hand as a result of trying to scrape the contents out of a detonator lound in the street by a companion, and thereby causing an explosion. There have been several cases of a like nature recently, and inconsequence Martin’s mother has written to his schoolmaster suggesting that the danger of detonators might be pointed out to the children. A serious trap accident occurred at Wakefield (Nelson) yesterday morning in consequence of a horse bolting and causinr a trap to collide with a post. The occupant of the trap (Mrs W. H. Brooks, the wife of a settler) was thrown out, anc sustained injuries from which she is not expected to recover. ■ C. C. Graham (district coroner) conducted an inquest at the Hospital this morning on the body of Samuel Strain, who uied in tli6 Hospital on Saturday nisdis* Dr Roberts said that yesterday ho made, s post-morten examination of tho body of deceased, and found that it was in an advanced state of dropsy. The heart was in a very advanced state of disease. He would say that the cause of death was gradual Heart failure, in consequence of deceased’s condition. Dr Stewart, house suigoon, also gave evidence, corroborating Dr Roberts s statements. The coroner returned a verdict in accordance with the medical evidence. An Auckland P.A. wire reports that after an evening meal, the principal dish being stewed mutton, Mrs Mary Ann Rowley and her daughter, residing at Ponsonby Terrace, developed ptomaine poisoning. Mrs Rowley died shortly after from heart failure. The daughter recovered. No explanation can be given ol the cause of poisoning.
