THE VALLANCE COOK MISSION

PUBLIC MEETING LAST NIGHT. The Vallance ■ Cook mission, which was opened in Dunedin on Sunday under the auspices of the Methodist Church, promises to be very effective. There is. substance without sensationalism in the meetings. A public meeting was held last night m the Salvation Army Barracks, 'and attended by close on 300 people. A choir, consisting of members of the local Methodist churches, gave heart to the singing. Mr Holgate was leader of the choir, and Miss Holgate was accompanist. The Rev. W. Slade opened the meeting with prayer. Mrs Cook read the lesson from St. Matthew’s Gospel, chap, xil, 14-21. She spoke of Jesus Christ as a gentle and loving Saviourwho did not despise the day of small things, and never gave a sinner up. He was always patiently ; standing by, ready to fan into a flame the embers of goodness in all sinners. The Rev. V. Trigge gave a spirited address, his subject being taken from Mark v., 27: “And when the woman had heard of Jesus she came in the press behind and touched His garment.” That woman, the speaker said, was the spiritual type of scores of their fellow-men. She was healed after she had given up trying other physicians. Everyone was cursed with the of sin, and it was only by giving up their trust in their morality and good works, and turning to Christ, that they could be healed. The woman had to force her way with difficulty through the crowd to reach the Saviour, and those who followed Christ would find that they had to push through a crowd of doubts and sins and sneering friends in order to reach Him. Before the meeting was over several people declared their intention to begin the Christian life. Meetings will be held each evening until Friday next.
