FIRES.

ALLEGED ARSON. Fifteen stacke of oatsheaf straw, the property of a farmer at Ellesmere Bridge, were destroyed by fire on Saturday morning. Later in the day the Ashburtonpolice arrested a man on a charge of arson in connection with the matter. The stacks were insured in the London and Lancashire Office. SUSPICIOUS CIRCUMSTANCES. Another blaze occurred at Cambridge on Saturday night, a four-roomed house and its contents being completely demolished. The occupants, named Hughes, were away for the week-end. The origin of the fire is a mystery. A great spirit of unrest prevails among the residents owing to such a repetition of fires.
