Lecturing on January 14 at the Medical Society of London on ‘ Psychotherapy and the Inebriate,’ Or H. C. Miller said that, although it was a platitude to say that, the chronic inebriate alcoholic had i.o'be treated early, the amazing tiring was that our local methods at present absolutely took no account of the fact. It was perfectly obvious that the law had a befltcr chance on the whole than doctors in treating early cases. The Magistrate now took the view that the inebriate's first offence was a little pleasantry, his second a little naughty, and his third thoroughly bad, whereas’ the opposite was the case. At first ho was a deliberate miscreant, afterwards he was loss culpable, and he ended by being only a sycopath. Then it was that the law started to treat him with severity and cruelty. The only thing he remembered was physical pain. “It was the only logical deterrent for the chronic alcoholic, and it was the one we did not use,” said the lecturer. “Why? Because wc were too scientific and too sentimental. Wo were too lily-livered to beat a man who beat his wife; therefore, in the name of humanity, the wife had to go on getting beaten. We would be kind to this miserable alcoholic if wc flogged him early, whereas it. was simply barbarous to imprison him late.”
