TRADES' AND LABOR COUNCIL
The. Trades and Labor Council me); on lliursday evening. Mr M. MeAUcn presiding. The Plasterers, Plumbers, Iron and Brass Moulders, Furniture Trades, and Waterside Workers' Unions wrote endorsing the council's resolution pleading themselves "to do all in their power to make the great Unity Congress, to be held in Wollingten in duly ? e ?*"> ,?' suc^p s worthy of United Lahor. The council decided lo co-opera to with the United Labor party and Socialist party towards making the visit of Mr 11. Scott Bennett a. success. An interesting discussion took place, on the manifesto on immigration, in the, course of which it was demonstrated that organised labor was Unoompromis"igly opposed to the immigration of workers who would become, competitors or the. situations at pfosent held by local workers. Tho opinion was frequency expressed that n majoritv of those advocating immigration were doing so with the ulterior motive of undermining existing industrial, conditions and wages. Additional evidence of workers experiencing broken time was also profforrccl by sonic of the speakers. The Executive of the. Council reported in connection with tho findings of the recent Unity Conference, in Wellington, and, with minor amendment which Hi no Case affetcod principles, recommended'the council to endorse the conference findings.--The report of tho executive was adopted. A Proposal from the Auckland Secretaries Union to amend tho constitution oi the Arbitration Court bv making ifc an Appeal Board of Experts was on* posed on the grounds that it is impossible to obtain exerts from many trades The Auckland proposition was that the permanent workers' and chip overs representatives should be replaced with experts from tho industry under review. Tli<r council endorsed recommendations.from tho same sburco in favor of amendments for the simpler adding of parties to awards, tho substitution, of a declaration of membership for the present system of supplying full annual lists of names and addresses of all union members, atid for the simplification of machinery for obtaining dominion awards. Intimation, was received from the Department of Internal Affairs that tho Government had decided l to grant the council a subsidy of £6OO in conuectidu with tire recent industrial exhibition.
