THE LATE KING OF GREECE
The late-King George I. of Greece was a brother of tlw Dowager Empress .of Russia and of Queen Alexandra of • England, lie was born in 1845, and was chosen King of Greece in 1863, in succession to O.tlio I. King Georgo married in 1867 Princess Olga, daughter of the Russian Grand Dul<e Constantino, by whom he had five sons and one daughter. There was an attempt to assassinate the-Kin; in 1898, which happily failed. The eldest son and HcirAppurent is Prince Constantine, Duke of Sparta, who was bom'on August 2,'. 1868, and who married .Princess Sophia of Prus-
sia, sister of the Emperor William 11., in 1389. The second son. Prince George, wag liorn in 1869. He was appointed High Commissioner in Crete, and held that office from 1893 till 1906. He married Princes? Mane, the only child of Prince Roland Bonaparte, on November 21, 1907. Another son, Prinze Andrew, married Princess Alice, oldest daughter of Prince Louis of Battenberg, in 1903. The late King was of the Lutheran faith, but by the Greek Constitution his heirs and successors must be members of the Greek Orthodox Church.
