IMPERIAL DEFENCE
MR CHURCHILL AND CAXADA. DEFENDED BY OPPOSITION PRESS. Press Association—By Telegraph—Copyright. LONDON, March 18. Mr Churchill's correspondence with Mr Borden has been published. The 'Daily Graphic' (U.) says the Memorandum contains no reflection on the industrial efficiency of Canada. For the present it would obviously be wiser to buy battleships where they can be built most cheaply. The 'Daily News' (Radical) says the correspondence removes the suspicion that Mr Churchill has thrust his opinion on the Canadian Government, but expresses the opinion on what it terms the lack of wisdom in building battleships which are unnecessary. The paper also disagrees with Mr Churchill's statement as to the difficulty of the Admiralty assisting Canada in manning her own fleet. The 'Daily Chronicle' (G.) blames Mr Chine hill for gratuitously entering the lists between Mr Borden and Sir Wilfrid Laurier. The alleged impracticability is almost entirely a matter of money. 'The Times' (U.) .-justifies Mr Churchill's action. r
