The ordinary meeting lasi night was at tended by the Mayor (Mr D. A. Dc Mans), Crs Lunn, Stevenson, Anderson, Mawsou, Asher, Isbisfcer, Soollay, Powell, and l Pail. His Worship referred dn feeling terms to the recent death of Captain M‘Callum, and it was resolved to send a letter of sympathy 'to deceased’s relatives. Or Asher etatec that deceased was a borough councillor in Port Chalmers in the years 1870 and 1871. —Correspondence.— Prom the Otago Harbor Board, intimating that the borough’s annual payment to the new dock had been refunded. l —Board to be thanked. Prom the Acting Town Clerk (Mr J. Fraser), stating be would take up his duties about April 21.—His Worship said they expected him sooner.—Received. Prom the Lands Department, stating ihat the £25 voted for Mussel Bay recreation ground was now available. —Referred to Reserves Committee. Prom Or Bauchop asking leave of absence. —Granted. —Football Ground.— A deputation consisting of Messrs F. W. Platte and W. Morgan Waited on the council and asked that the control of the recreation ground at Mussel Bay be handed over to the local football club during the forthcoming season and at the pleasure of the council. The club would undertake to find all moneys needed for improvements or repairs. The ground would be available for other than the Rugby form of football, and teams from ships could also use the ground for football or other recreation purposes, always provided that the club were not using it lor any match.—After the deputation withdrew the matter was discussed, and referred to the Reserves Committee to make arrangements with the football club. " —Reports.— The Water Committee reported that the water services had been repaired at the water officer’s office, also George and Beach streets. The committee recommended that the water officer’s department be put under the control of the borough inspector. The water in the reservoir was within Sin of overflowing.—Exception was taken to the proposed change in the control of the water department, as there was to be a reorganisation of the staff when the new clerk took office.—The reference to the water department was deleted, and the report then adopted. The Baths Committee reported that additions to the walls of the baths had been done, four extra posts having been fixed and the battens nailed horizontally. An extra shower bath had also been fixed ready for use.—Adopted. The Works Committee reported that the work in Burns street was being completed, the two mud tanks in the same street having been built. 'Sixteen yards of metal had been spread and blinded in Currie street.—Or Asher drew attention to the fact that a reward was offered to anyone giving information which would secure the conviction of anyone damaging the plantations in any way.—Report adopted. The Reserves Committee recommended the transfer of the lease of Mihiwaka sections 86 and 87 from J. T. 'Simpson to Mr S. H; C. Mead, of Duuback. The committee were considering the matter of improving Mussel Bay recreation ground, on which the inspector had reported, and further inquiries were being made.—Cr Asher said a large tree at the Beach road had been mutilated to a fatal extent. A reward should be ■offered in order to find the perpetrator of the vandalism.—The report was adopted. —Scott Memorial.— The Scott Memorial Committee reported that they met on the 15th, and resolved that a suitable memorial be erected to Captain Scott and party, on a site to be selected by the committee, and that the committee would be pleased to receive designs for same from competent persons patriotic enough to give the designs free of charge.—Cr Stevenson would have liked to hear how it was proposed to raise the funds.—Cr Anderson thought the co-operation of other public bodies in town should be asked.—Cr Lunn suggested that a public meeting be called to consider the matter.—Cr Powell said that when the committee had designs to hand, with probable cost, then something more practical would be proceeded with.—After discussion, it was decided to add to the report that a public meeting be called, and to further consider the matter.—Report as amended was adopted, the committee to select a site for the approval of the council. It was suggested that the Mayor of Dunedin and Mr J. F. M. Fraser, K.C., be asked to attend the proposed public meeting. —Street Lighting.— The Chairman of the Lighting Committee submitted quotations from the Gas Company for lighting the streets. The prices were the same as in the previous lighting contract, excepting a shilling per lamp extrain the case of the big lamps on the main street. It was agreed to enter into an eight months’ street-lighting contract, to start trom March —General.— It was decided that the rates' for the ensuing year be the same as in the past year.
