NEW AMBASSADOR TO JAPAN
_'' Sir AVilliam Conyngham Greene, K.C.8., who has been appointed British Ambassador at Tokio, has been in charge of the British Legation at Copenhagen since 1911. Sir William obtained a clerkship in the Foreign Office in 1877" (says 'The Times'), "and three years later was appointed Acting Third Secretary at Athens. In 18S3 lie was transferred to Stuttgart with the same rank, and in the course of tho, next six years acted repeatedly as Charge d'Affaircs at Stuttgart and Darmstadt. Since then he has served in many capitals, including Brussels, Teheran, Berne, and Bukarest. During his five years in Rumania Sir Conviijrham Greene enjoyed in a marked degree the esteem of the Court and the official world." It was in 1896 he was appointed British Agent in Pretoria, and | here lie remained until the interruption of diplomatic relations in 1899.
