Bates) supplied the following n't noon to-day : —Strong northerly breezes after 12 hours: cloudy and unsettled, with rain; tides moderate, sea rough off shore. ARRlVED.—October 31. Karori, s.s., 1,863 tons, from Timaru. SAlLED.—October 30. Invereargill, s.s., 223 tons, Gillies, for Invereargill. Maitai, s.s., arrived at Westport this morning from Port Chalmers. Wa'naka, s.s., is leaving Anckland on Saturday for Oamaru, Bluff, and Timaru. The training ship Dartford is due to leave Newcastle shortly for Wellington, where, according to a Northern exchange, she will be dismantled and become a coal hulk. When a similar announcement was made some time ago by a Sydney shipping paper it was receive'd with reserve in shipping circles, and described as premature by the Union Company. The cadets will probably be occupied until the end of the year, as previously announced. They w'ill then transfer to some of the bigger Red Funnel steamers making oversea voyages. Taviuni, s.s., will leave here about Monday for the West Coast direct. She is due first about Sunday. Flora, s.s., will sail from here on Thursday next, and will visit way ports en route for the West Coast. Kaiapoi, s.s., will dock at Port Chalmers to-morrow, and will sail probably on Saturday for Lyttelton. Karori, s.s., arrived this morning from Timaru. She sails at daylight to-morrow for Oamaru. Kotare, s.s., is due to-night or early tomorrow morning from Akaroa. A schooner carrying a cargo of lumber across the Atlantic Ocean was struck bv a hurricane on October 16, and filled and rolled over. The crew perched on the side of the vessel, and remained there for three days without food or water. They were rescued by a steamer, which poured oil on the waters, and sent a boat to them. —Sydney ' Sun.' Kaipara, s.s., made the trip from Dunedin to Sydney in. the fast time of 4 days, her average daily run being 300 miles. In connection with the Sydney cablegram of last Friday relating to "the loss of the Papanui, it is now stated that the vessel was not wrecked, but caught fire and was beached at St. Helena in order that the holds, might be flooded. THE NEW MARATHON. With two funnels, additional passenger accommodation, several improvements "to cargo-handling appliances, and some 50ft increase on her original length, the Aberdeen liner Marathon departed from Plymouth on the 20th inst., in continuation of her passage to Australia from London. This vessel, as stated in our columns some time ago, has been out of commission for some months, in order to allow the necessary improvements being effected, and so complete is the overhaul she received whilst they were, in progress that she may now be regarded as a " new " ship. The steamer Miltiades is now beint; treated similarly to the Marathon,' and from latest advices the work is progressing so satisfactorily that she ought to take her departure from London within the next few weeks.
