RETURN. Olrig : 15oz 12dwt, week. A GREAT FIGHTER. The boxer James Corbett, whoso death at- Winnipeg was advised immediately after a message stating that he had made a marvellous recovery, was. some 25 years ago, a bank clerk in San Francisco. He learned boxing at the Olympic Club " for the fun of the thing."" discovered that he bad a gift that way, gave up clerking, and became "professor of boxing" in his old club. At this time the only great. man in the world of pugilism was John L. Sullivan, whoso mighty fist and ugly glare had earned him a. fortune. "John L." travelled the United States offering 1.000 dollars to any man who could stand up for four rounds against him. Corbett saw Sulliyar, tested him, came to certain definite- conclusions, and on Sullivan's return from his theatrical failure in Australia challenged him for the championship of the world. The great man laughed, but accepted it, and he continued laughing and boasting right up to the hour he entered the ring to meet his Waterloo. • Then the money poured in upon the champion, who had a play written around himself and took to the stage. But Corbett. like Sullivan, in a, few years had to give way to the fist of Fitzfiimmons, who, in turn, gave place, to Jeffries, and Jeffries to Johnson.
