NAPIER-GISBORNE RAILWAY.
About 20 persons attended a meeting held at _ Napier last night for the purpose of considering the action of the Government in stopping work at the Napier end of the East Coast Railway. The Deputy Mayor presided, but no other members of any of the local bodies took part in the meeting. The following resolutions were carried by a large majority:—“ That this meeting of citizens desire to express surprise at the action of iho Government in suspending work at tho southern end of the Napier-Gisborne Railway ; that this action would necessitate considerable delay in the completion of the line; and that the reason given by the Hon. Minister of Public Works that it is impossible for the materials and engine to be taken to the west shore until the bridge and embankment are complete is not according to fact, it being quite possible to land the engine and materials from a scow.” “That this meeting re-' quest the members of Parliament for the districts immediately concerned to make combined urgent representations to tho Minister of Public, Works and to tho Government that this matter receive the immediate attention of the department, and that a sum be placed on the Estimates for further work on the li^e.”
