fho steamer Hurst arrived in the roadstead at lunaru early yesterday morning and lay outside till 4 p.m., owincr to "a difference between the agents and the waterside workers relating to the rate of pay for unloading the bulk superphosphate cargo from Japan. Some months ago a local agreement was made with the men by which they undertook to discharge such cargo at Is 9d per hour. Yesterday they demanded 2c, with 3b overtime to 10 p n { and 4s thereafter. As the vessel is' on time charter, and nothing else can be done, the agents had to agree to the men’s terms. The union officials charge the New Zealand Employers’ Association officials wjth avoiding a conference on the subject oi handling bulk manures.
