The appointment of Mr Spence, formerly Collector of Custom?, Invercargill, to act as C ustnms expert in London has caused a vacancy on the Public Service Superannuation Board. Mr Malcolm Fraser, Government .Statistician, who was hen. secretary of the Civil' Service Superannuation Committee, and subsequently accountant to the fund, has been nominated for the position. Nominations (wires our ‘Wellington correspondent) dose on October 16.

A very old resident of Poverty Bay, (Mr William .Matthew Kirk, died ’ yesterday afternoon after ;t long and painful illness. Mr Kirk fought throughout the Maori wars, taking part in the engagement, at Whakatane and in (he Waikato, and later he was a member of the force which opposed the Ha nans in Poverty Bay. Mr Charles Fenwick and the officers of the Bank of New South Wales were entertained by Mr Mackay. the relieving manager, at supper on the occasion of Mr Fenwick's ret dement after 55 years' service in Dunedin and elsewhere. During the evening Mr Mackay, on behalf of his brother officers in Dunedin and in other parts of the Dominion, presented Mr Fenwick with n Chesterfield sola, Morris chairs, and an oak pedestal coal scuttle, as a mark of the esteem in which be was held. The Nonconformist Choir Union held their annual concert at the Crystal Palace (Loudon) on July 20. A choir of 4,000 voices gave miscellaneous items, and the soloist was Miss Mabel Mnnson (neo Miss Braiihwaiie, Dunedin), who sang the ‘Gallia’ solos, 'Hear Ye. Israel.’ etc. The ‘Musical Times' says Miss Manson, the soprano soloist, has just, the sort of voice and style for the huge auditorium, and ehe was a popular success. ffir James Mills will be a passenger by the Mnramn on her next voyage from Vancouver.
