DRAINAGE BOARD.

The, fortnightly meeting of the - Dunedin Drainage Board was held last night, and attended by Messrs J. Arkle (chairman), J. Small, W. p.arquh arson, W. Burnett, T. Christie, J. J. Marlow, and Dr Fulton. An apology for absence was received from Mr Douglas. —Correspondence. — The .Secretary of the Otago Harbor Board wrote intimating that the board had decided to proceed with the reclamation of tho southern endowment between Kitchener street and Anderson Bay, which would necessitate provision for tho disposal of storm water The board were willing to contribute .£9,000 towards the cost of tho necessary works—the amount agreed upon at a confer- I enca of the two boards on September 20, 1910. Bis board hoped that an equitable and amicable settlement would be arrived at.— The Chairman remarked that the matter was of the utmost importance.—^Mr Marlow said ho thought that the letter should be referred to the Works Committee for report.— Referred to the Works Committee. John E. Wright wrote asking the board to bring their drains up to the boundary of his section at Gourlcy street, Musselburgh, so that he might connect the drains of a house in the course of erection. —Referred to the Works Committee. The Secretary of the Dunedin Plumbers’ Union of Workers wrote slating _ that as the award had expired he had been instructed to call a meeting of employers and employees to consider the new schedule of proposals. Tho union would be pleased to meet a deputation from the board at a conference on August 27.—Received. —Reports.— Mr Small, in moving the adoption of the Works Committee's report (previously published). said there was nothing requiring explanation. He suggested that the clause dealing with the sewage reticulation be referred to the Works Committee for consideration. The work in hand is nearing completion, and no further work has been authorised. The Chairman, in presenting the Finance Committee's report, said that they were selling a good deal of debentures over the counter, and that arrangements had been made to give the brokers a small commission.—Tho report was adopted. —Drainage of Tainui.— The report of the special committee who had been" appointed to consider the question as to the inclusion of Tainui and Sunshine townships in the Borough of St. Kiida was laid on the table. (Tho report was published yesterday.) The Chairman said that the only thing in tho report worth notice was the uncertainly as to whether tho area would come automatically into the borough or whether it would have to bo brought in by special resolution. That was the only question over which there was doubt. Mr Marlow said that the residents of the districts were sorry that the board had opposed the petition to have the area included in St. Kiida. But until the position was clear he did not think the board could do anything else. Mr Christie gave it as his opinion that the board had no option but to oppose tho inclusion. Mr Marlow remarked that the opposition might have the effect of a commission being sot up to go into the facts. That would clear ilia ground, and perhaps a method might be found whereby the area could be included. The Chairman said that all the residents had to do was to erect plenty of houses and set up a menace to the public health. Action would then have to be taken. Meanwhile, however, tho board would do nothing rash. The report was adopted, the special committee to look after the board’s interests. The board then went into committee.
