FOE BRAVERY.

On the night the Star of Canada went ashore at Gisborne the little tug Hipi put out in the teeth of the gale, and, running the gauntlet of tremendous sea-s, which threatened to swamp her, succeeded in getting close enough to the liner to learn that the crew wore in no immediate danger, and to obtain accurate information as to the nature of the mishap, so that in the morning it was possible to immediately place the Tyse.r Company’s officials on board with a view to salvage. The sequel occurred last night, when the Mayor, on behalf of the public of Gisborne, presented each member of the Hipi’a crew with a suitably-inscribed gold medal in recognition of the gallant act and as a memento of an adventurous voyage. The Hipi’s crew wore as follows: Captain Palmer, A. F. Long (engineer), A. Houghton (fireman), J. Olive, W. Fitzmaurice, T. Maunsell, and E, Warren (crew). Captain Dimming (harbor master) and a representative of the Gisborne ‘ Times ’ were also on board. W, H. Douglas was also presented with the bronze medal awarded by the Royal Humane Society for his plucky attempt to save a boy named Gordon Brown from drowning on April 11.
