HOCKEY. The following have beern chosen to represent, Hawke's Bay at the annual tournament of the New Zealand Ladies' Hockey Association at Christchurch next month: Misses M. Morri-eon, O. Puflett, J. Burden, M. Stain, C. Humphries, G. Morrison, V. Pitt, D. Corbin, K. Crowley, C. Smith, and B. Harrison : reserves —Mispes E. Thompson, A. Rumdle. and M. Burden. Our Cromwell correspondent writes: On Saturday the Arrowtown hockey team journeyed to Cromwell and played the local team, who, contrary to all expec. tations, defeated the visitors by 6 goals to nil. The win is the more commendable as this is the first season the Cromwell Club have been in existence, and the first match they ever played, whereas the Arrowtown Club have been playing for two year?. Mr William Delanoy coached tho Cromwell ladies. The following teams have been selected to represent Otago in interprovincial matches to be played next week : Against Southland.—Goal, Leith ; fullbacks, Whibley and Smart; ..halves —Fenwick, Slater, Bannerman ; forwards— Hogg, Calder, F. Drake, Ferens, Culliford. Against North Otago and South Canterbury.—Goal, R. Bannerman; full-backs. Moxham and Adams; halves—Fra-ser, Forrester, and Thompson; forwards— M'Master, Thomas, Penman, Potter, Forbes. A match between these teams will be played at Forbury Park on Saturday.
CYCLING ROAD RACE. One hundred and fifty cyclists have been handicapped for the Goulburn-Sydney Road Race on September 14. Kirkham (Victoria* is alone on the scratch mark. No New Zealanders are included. SPORTS PROTECTION LEAGUE. If there were no active opponents there would ce no necessity to have an organisation for defence. 'The New Zealand Sports Protection League's attitude is defeaisive; the main concern is to prevent interference with the members, and generally to band together the fair-minded men against the prejudiced. The extremists, by persistent agitation, have been influencing legislation It is to combat these attempts that '.he establishment of the league was decided on. The membership of this body is approaching 100,000, and before the end of the current year it is expected ihat it will exceed that number. Or. Thursday evening the general secretary will address a meeting at"Mosgiel, and on Friday a public meeting will be held at Lawrence "for the purposo of forming a biainch of the league. BETTING CHARTS. At Wellington yesterday Arthur Law, J. Cowan, and Dave Rosa, for whom Mr M. Myers appeared, were charged on separate count* with publishing betting notifications in July last, and after hearing evidence the Magistrate reserved his decision. In Law's case Detective-sergeant Cassels wrote from the Railway Hotel on July 12 asking to be supplied with a double card, signing the letter "J. Morris, Railway Hotel, Lower Hutt." The cards were furnished, marked "Yankee Jack" (the sobriquet used by Law), and 10s were *orwarded for the double Sir Lethe (National Steeples) and The Native (National Hurdles). In Cowan's case a similar letter was sent. In reply cards were received marked " C.C.," which the detective said he knew were, from Cowan. In the case of Ross the cards were marked "Y.Z." A postal note sent by Detective Cassels was returned by Ross, with a covering leter stating that defendant had given up the bookmaking business. GOLF. - A four-ball (bogey) match was played at the St. Clair Links on Saturday. Best cards handed in :—Macfarlane and! Forsyth 3 up, Isaacs and Irvine 3 Chapman and Jardine, Hunter and' E. J. Hocking, and Drake and Gallaway all 2 up.
