Press Association—By Telegraph—Copyright. The Federal House of Representatives is still discussing the Budget. The Senate has adjourned, as it has no work to do. Fifteen Syrian emigrants landed at Cherbourg from America, and travelled overland to Marseilles, while suffering from yellow fever. An "official of the Schaffhausen Bank, at Berlin, who embezzled £8,500 worth of Prussian Consols, was arrested while attempting to commit suicide. At a meeting of the Sarawak Council the Rajah outlined a scheme for a council to meet in London for the purpose of supporting the Government against European intrigue, which, he alleged, is being pursued to injure the independence and integrity of Sarawak (Borneo). Arthur Christy was sentenced at Sydney to six months' imprisonment on the charge of being a suspected person. The police claimed that the accused was identical with a man from New Zealand against whom there were a number of convictions. Christy denied this, but declined to enter the witness-box. The Order of the Garter was bestowed upon the Emperor of Japan by Prince Arthur of Connanght, who represents King George at the funeral of the late Mikado.
