A CLEVER THIEF.

AUCKLAND, August 23
Edward Simmonds was committed for trial to-day on a charge of having issued valueless cheques and stolen diamond rings, the property of Mr Pascoe, jeweller. Simmonds in May last sent a telephone message to Mr Pascoe's ordering a number of diamond rings to be sent to the, residence of Mr Nathan, a prominent citizen. Simmoridfi met the messenger at the gate, and, representing himself to be Mr Nathan, took possession of the rings, and then disappeared. Several of the rings -were subsequently pawned. Accused_ next cashed forged cheques for substantial sums, and disappeared. At Timaru later on ho was arrested for passing valueless cheques, and was sentenced to two years' imprisonment. He then confessed to the theft of the rings and forgeries at Auckland.
