A romantic story, in which the course of true love has met with the proverbial opposition, has been- brought to a happy finish by the permission of the Washington authorities for an American bluejacket to marry an English girl, who recently came to this country lor that purpose. The bluejacket, is an able seaman named Clay Hatty, a member of the crew of the battleship Coniioetieut, which visited Portsmouth last year with the American squadron. Hatty, while ashore at Portsmouth on leave, fell in lovo with .Miss Mabel Granger, of that place, and asked her to marry him when his time expired in December .Miss Granger, who is equally in love with the sailor, promised to do so, and meet him in America. Unfortunately, howover, Miss Grander arrived here before Hatty's time was up, and he was not aware of hoi- arrival, consequently he did not moot her. The young woman was detained at Ellis Island, and Hatty, who was then employed in file Brooklyn Navy Yard, was sent for. Tho bluejacket went immediately to Ellis Island, and he and Ihe English girl told their story to the immigrant authorities, who, however, Mere hard-hearted enough to refuse the sailor leave to take. Miss Granger from the station, because between them they had not the requisite sum of money permitting; an immigrant to enter this country. 'Die authorities also threatened to deport Miss Granger. Hatty, who is the son of a well-to-do Kentucky farmer, appealed to the Navy Department in Washington, and through the assistance of tho Congressman from his district in Kentucky sufficient pressure has been brought to boar to secure the release of Miss Granger and permission for Ratty to marry her. The man, who bears an excellent record in the navy, is to be honorably discharged, when he will take his bride home to Keiituckv.—' Daily Chronicle's ' Now York correspondent.
