IMPERIAL POLITICS.

MR BONAR LAW'S SPEECH

UNDER THE LANCE OF CRITICISM.

Press Association —By Telegraph—Copyright.

LONDON, January 29.

Speaking at Gateshead, the -Minister of War (Lord Haklane) replied to Mr Bonar Law's criticisms of his department. He said the Opposition Leader's references to obsolete weapons were due to a casual remark made by Earl Roberts, who had had no opportunity of studying at clone quarters the new howitzer, which was the finest in tho world, and the Held gun, which was the best, except the French territorial field gun. It was slightly heavier, but for most purposes was as good as tho German regular field gun. He hoped the new infantry rifle for the British Army would prove the. best in the world. The supply of horses had been greatly increased, and the War Office was now introducing changes in the system of mechanical transport.
