SOUTHLAND LABORERS.
A NEW AWARD. Mr Roberts, clerk of awards, has received the award by the Arbitration Court in respect to the Southland Public Bodies and Contractors’ Laborers. The award is dated the 27th November. It is to be in force from Ist January, 1912, to Ist January, 1914. The recommendation of the Conciliation Council is adopted, except in the following clauses Minimum Kates of Wages.—Laborers employed in laying pipes and making pipe joints* who require to have a license, Is Ijd per hour; tunnel men, timber men. and caulkers, Is 3d per hour; laborer: employed in wet places at bottom of trenches more than sft below the surface. Is per hour; laborers employed at concrete work, pic!>-and-shovol work, sewer work, kerbing and channelling work, laying and cleaning drains, asphalt and tar work, and all other general laborers, Is per hour. The following shall be the minimum rates of wages for workers engaged in quarry ■work : —Workers employed in getting out pitchers, building stone, kerbstone, and paving stone ready for” the masons shall be paid Is 3d per hour; hammer and drill men, jumper mcli, and workers using explosives. Is Id per hour; all other workers: Is per hour. Clauses as to payment of wages, subletting and piecework, and preference are also formulated by the Courf. The wording oi me ciau.se relating Ir country work has been altered, and there are special clauses dealing with the Invercargill tramways and the Bluff Harbor Board. A memorandum attached over the signature of Mr Justice Sim reads thus: “ This award is intended to apply only to workers employed by local bodies, contractors, and quarry-owners, and to workers employed by other employers when doing work similar to that done by local bodies, contractors, and quarry-owners.”
