Mr Sidev's motion for Government as-«istan--e towards improving the Ocean Beach foreshore has been treated by the House from the point of view of procedure and tactics. He also that the Government wero directly interested. lie reminded the.ni that some years ago compensation had been paid, bv the Government to propertyowucrs in St. Ivikla whose lands had been invaded by the sea. and recognising an obligation to protect from sea encroachment lands of which the freehold had been .-.-ranted, expenditure had been incurred in the constriict-ian of groins at St. Clair. Ho eulogised the reclamation work of the Dunedin Ocean Beach Domain Board with the limited means as their disposal, and pointed out that there was the mailings of a oark in the vicinity of the Central Battery—.a park which might be made availa-blo for military purposes. If the proposed works at St. Clair were canned on no further expenditure on groin* would he required at St. Clair. He "submitted that in these ways the Government had a direct interest, as well as in the protection of their pronertr at the Central Battery, and lie hoped eubetantial assistance would b© raven both to the Domain Board and th« Dunedin City Council.
